UK Starmer Reaffirms Readiness to Safeguard Arctic Security

(MENAFN) British Prime Minister Keir Starmer reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s readiness to safeguard Arctic stability in coordination with NATO, following rising tensions over Greenland.

According to a statement from the prime minister’s office, Starmer made the pledge during a late Tuesday phone call with European Council President Antonio Costa, as the two leaders reviewed recent developments affecting Greenland and broader Arctic security. "He reiterated that the UK is prepared to play its part to protect Arctic security, alongside NATO," the statement said.

Starmer also restated Britain’s position that Greenland’s future rests solely with the people of Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark, underscoring respect for Danish sovereignty over the self-governing territory.

Both leaders stressed the necessity of sustained defense and security cooperation in these "volatile times."

The call comes amid escalating controversy sparked by US President Donald Trump, who has publicly pushed for acquiring Greenland, pointing to its strategic importance, mineral wealth, and what he claims are growing threats from Russia and China.

On Monday, Trump declined to rule out the use of force to seize the island and circulated fabricated images to bolster his argument. In response, authorities in Denmark and Greenland have firmly rejected any suggestion of a sale, reiterating Denmark’s sovereign control.

Meanwhile, France, Denmark, Sweden, and Germany are increasing their military footprint in the region through expanded exercises and reconnaissance operations.

Critics warn that Trump’s campaign to obtain Greenland risks fracturing the Western alliance—an outcome they argue would benefit Beijing and Moscow. They also note that existing agreements already allow the United States to defend Greenland through established US bases and forces, rendering any takeover unnecessary.
