UN calls on dialogue after Syrian security forces took control
(MENAFN) The United Nations has urged all parties to maintain dialogue after Syrian security forces took control of the Al-Hol camp in eastern Hasakah and began restoring order.
The UN highlighted that any agreement to halt hostilities would be a positive step toward reducing violence. When asked about the recent "mutual understanding" reached between the Syrian government and the YPG/SDF, UN spokesperson Farhan Haq said during a press briefing, "Obviously, if there is an agreement on the ground and understanding on the ground, that will put a hold on the violence, that would be a welcome development."
"We'll have to see what happens in the coming hours," he added, emphasizing that the UN remains hopeful all parties will continue dialogue and take steps to minimize violence.
Haq also noted that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is monitoring the situation in northeast Syria with "great concern," stressing the importance of securing detention facilities. "The secretary general urges the parties to continue dialogue, and to move forward in good faith, and work together to secure the implementation of all agreements," he said.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Syrian presidency announced that a "mutual understanding" had been reached with the SDF regarding the future of eastern Hasakah province. The agreement provides the SDF with "four days for consultations" to prepare "a detailed plan for practical integration of the areas," according to the statement.
