Türkiye-South Korea Foreign Ministers Hold Key Talks in Ankara

(MENAFN) Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held discussions Wednesday with his South Korean counterpart Cho Hyun, who arrived in Turkey for official consultations.

The diplomatic engagement occurred in Ankara, Türkiye's Foreign Ministry confirmed via a post on Turkish social platform NSosyal. The ministry shared photographs from the encounter but provided no additional specifics about the agenda.

Historic Ties Spanning Seven Decades
Diplomatic bonds between Ankara and Seoul stretch back to August 11, 1949, when Turkey became one of the earliest nations to recognize South Korea's sovereignty. Formal diplomatic relations followed in 1957.

Türkiye distinguished itself as among the first responders when war erupted on the Korean Peninsula in 1950, dispatching forces under a UN Security Council mandate. Nearly 23,000 Turkish military personnel deployed to South Korea throughout the conflict and subsequent years.

The relationship achieved strategic partnership status in 2012.

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung conducted an official state visit to Türkiyelast November, culminating in three bilateral agreements and a joint declaration reinforcing their strategic cooperation. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan last traveled to South Korea in 2018.

Robust Economic Partnership
South Korea ranks as Türkiye’s second-largest Asia-Pacific trading partner behind China. Bilateral commerce hit approximately $10.3 billion in 2024, with the two nations maintaining strong economic linkages.
