Medvedev claims Trump seeks historical legacy by Greenland acquisition
(MENAFN) A senior Russian official says US President Donald Trump is driven by a desire to “remain in history forever” through an effort to take control of Greenland, according to remarks made on Wednesday.
In comments shared online, Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, suggests that European states may attempt to convince Trump to “accept full guardianship” of Greenland while officially keeping the island under the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark.
The former Russian leader argues, however, that such an arrangement would fall short of Trump’s ambitions. He claims the US president instead wants to “paint the island on world maps in the stars and stripes and stand alongside the founding fathers.”
Medvedev also warns that placing Greenland under US control could ultimately undermine and even trigger the collapse of NATO.
Greenland, which governs itself while remaining part of the Danish kingdom, has drawn Trump’s attention because of its strategic position and extensive mineral wealth, along with concerns over reported Russian and Chinese activities in the region.
Trump has declined to rule out the use of force to seize the island and has circulated meme-style images supporting his stance. Both Denmark and Greenland have firmly dismissed any suggestion of selling the territory, reiterating Denmark’s sovereignty over the island.
