Trump shares private message from French counterpart

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has made public what he described as a private message sent by French President Emmanuel Macron, sharing its contents on his social media platform.

The message shows the French leader questioning Washington’s intentions regarding Greenland, proposing the organization of a G7 meeting in Paris involving Ukraine, Denmark, Syria, and Russia, and asking to arrange a personal meeting with the US president over dinner. In the note, Macron wrote, “I do not understand what you are doing on Greenland,” and later added, “Let us have a dinner together in Paris together [sic] on thursday before you go back to the us.”

The release of the message comes after a public disagreement between Trump and Macron over a US-backed initiative known as the ‘Gaza Board of Peace’, which France declined to participate in. The body, chaired by Trump, is intended to manage the transition in the conflict-affected Palestinian territory. France explained its refusal by stating that the board’s mandate “extends beyond Gaza and therefore exceeds the scope of the peace plan endorsed by the United Nations.”

Trump responded by dismissing Macron’s relevance, saying “nobody wants” him on the proposed council due to the approaching end of his presidential term. He also suggested that France’s position could be altered through the imposition of trade tariffs. The initiative is scheduled to be officially launched with the signing of its charter during events on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos later this week.

Attention at the annual gathering of global leaders and business figures is expected to focus heavily on rising friction between the US and several Western European countries resisting Trump’s push to acquire Greenland from Denmark. The US president has announced new tariffs targeting eight European NATO members and has argued that they should prioritize involvement in the Ukraine conflict instead.
