U.S. Troops Withdraw from Key Iraq Airbase
(MENAFN) The United States has completed its troop withdrawal from Iraq’s Al-Asad Airbase, sharply scaling back the Pentagon’s military presence to areas under Kurdish administration.
The pullout, formalized in a 2024 agreement with Baghdad, moved forward even as regional strains intensified following remarks by US President Donald Trump, who suggested potential military action against neighboring Iran in response to anti-government demonstrations.
Located in Iraq’s al-Anbar Governorate, Al-Asad Airbase long served as a cornerstone of the US military mission after the 2003 invasion. That role diminished significantly after 2020, when the US killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani during a visit to Iraq prompted the Iraqi government to demand the departure of foreign troops.
Over the weekend, the Iraqi Defense Ministry published video showing senior military officials touring the now-vacant installation. On Sunday, a defense committee supervising the handover confirmed that all former US-operated sites are now “under the full control of Iraqi security forces.”
