Trump invites Russia to participate in Gaza peace council
(MENAFN) Russia has received an invitation to join a new “Peace Board” proposed by US President Donald Trump, designed to oversee post-conflict governance and reconstruction in Gaza, according to the Kremlin.
The initiative, announced late last year following a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, envisions an international council responsible for coordinating reconstruction funding, security arrangements, and political affairs in Gaza, working alongside a Palestinian technocratic administration during a transitional period. Officials have said the body could eventually expand to address other conflicts.
Draft documents suggest that countries may participate on the board for up to three years unless they contribute more than $1 billion in cash within the first year.
Speaking on Monday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Putin had received an invitation through diplomatic channels. “We are studying the details of the proposal. We hope to hold contacts with the US side to clarify all the nuances,” he said, without providing further specifics.
Reports indicate that a variety of countries from Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, including US allies and regional powers, have received invitations. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Vietnamese Communist Party chief To Lam have accepted their invitations.
However, several nations have expressed caution, requesting more clarity on the responsibilities and scope of membership. Critics argue that the Board could overlap with or undermine existing UN-led mechanisms.
