Tokyo Stocks Close Monday Down
(MENAFN) Tokyo's financial markets retreated Monday as traders took a cautious approach following aggressive tariff warnings from Washington targeting Denmark and European allies over territorial disputes involving Greenland.
Japan's premier equity gauge—the 225-component Nikkei Stock Average—closed 352.60 points lower, representing a 0.65 percent decline to settle at 53,583.57, down from Friday's finish.
Meanwhile, the more comprehensive Topix benchmark slipped 2.28 points, marking a 0.06 percent drop to close at 3,656.40.
During intraday trading, the flagship Nikkei index experienced a dramatic plunge exceeding 800 points as geopolitical friction intensified between Washington and European capitals throughout the weekend. The selloff followed Trump's declaration imposing 10-percent levies on all imports from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Britain, the Netherlands, and Finland regarding the Greenland issue, with implementation scheduled for Feb. 1.
Market participants adopted a defensive posture as uncertainty surrounding the transatlantic trade confrontation deepened, triggering volatility across Tokyo's trading floors.
