Ovechkin declines to participate in NHL LGBT event
(MENAFN) Russian hockey star Alexander Ovechkin, who plays for the Washington Capitals, chose not to participate in an NHL event supporting the LGBT community.
During Saturday’s game against the Florida Panthers, the Capitals held their annual Pride Night, with several players wrapping their sticks in rainbow-colored tape. Ovechkin, however, used traditional white tape on his stick, maintaining his previous stance against symbolic displays.
The Capitals lost the game 2–5. Coach Spencer Carbery commented that it was “a great night to celebrate Pride... Wish we could’ve gotten the win for tonight.”
The NHL first introduced Pride Night events more than 20 years ago. In 2023, the league briefly banned LGBT-themed gear after some Russian players declined to wear rainbow sweaters for religious reasons. The league later reversed the restrictions, allowing players to decide individually whether to use rainbow-colored tape.
At the time, Ovechkin praised the NHL for not punishing players who opted out. “Well, what can I say here? Well done. It should be like this everywhere,” he said.
