Trump, NATO Chief Hold Phone Talks on Greenland
(MENAFN) NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and US President Donald Trump held telephone discussions Sunday regarding Arctic security matters and the Greenland situation.
"We will continue working on this, and I look forward to seeing him in Davos later this week," Rutte stated via X, the American social media platform.
The autonomous Danish territory of Greenland has sustained US attention for decades owing to its geopolitical positioning, extensive mineral deposits, and purported anxieties surrounding escalating Russian and Chinese presence in the region.
Escalating tensions Saturday, Trump announced Washington would levy 10% duties on imports from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Finland beginning February 1, climbing to 25% by June—retaliation for their resistance to American authority over Greenland.
In response to the tariff declaration, European leadership including the European Council and EU Commission presidents pledged unified countermeasures.
