European NATO nations push back against Trump’s Greenland tariff threats
(MENAFN) European NATO countries have jointly pushed back against US President Donald Trump, warning that his threat to impose tariffs over Greenland could jeopardize “transatlantic relations,” according to a statement released Sunday.
Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Finland affirmed that their positions remain unchanged and pledged a “united and coordinated” response following Trump’s announcement of a 10% levy on imports from the eight nations due to their opposition to his plans to acquire the Danish autonomous territory.
“Tariff threats undermine transatlantic relations and risk a dangerous downward spiral. We will continue to stand united and coordinated in our response. We are committed to upholding our sovereignty,” the declaration stated, echoing a nearly identical message from European officials in Brussels the previous day.
The European NATO members said they remain open to dialogue with Washington, provided discussions respect “the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
Earlier, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson condemned the move as “blackmail,” while French President Emmanuel Macron described the tariff threats as “unacceptable.”
Trump has long sought to bring Greenland under US control and recently intensified these efforts, citing alleged security risks from Chinese and Russian influence in the Arctic—claims that both Moscow and Beijing have rejected.
