EU Calls Extraordinary Meeting Over Trump Tariff Warning

(MENAFN) The European Council will convene an urgent extraordinary session within days to confront U.S. President Donald Trump's explosive tariff ultimatum demanding Greenland's acquisition, the bloc's president announced Sunday.

"Given the significance of recent developments and in order to further coordinate, I have decided to convene an extraordinary meeting of the European Council in the coming days," Antonio Costa declared via the U.S. social media company X.

Following intensive consultations among EU member states, Costa said leaders "reconfirm our strong commitment" to unity, international law, territorial integrity and national sovereignty, alongside unwavering solidarity with Denmark and Greenland. He emphasized shared transatlantic interests in maintaining peace and security throughout the Arctic region, particularly through NATO.

Costa revealed that member nations unanimously reaffirmed their assessment that such tariffs "would undermine transatlantic relations and are incompatible with the EU-US trade agreement." European leaders expressed readiness to defend against any coercive measures while remaining open to constructive U.S. engagement on mutual concerns.

Trump's Escalating Tariff Demands
The emergency summit follows President Trump's Saturday announcement threatening to slap 10% tariffs on goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Finland starting February 1, with rates skyrocketing to 25% by June unless a deal materializes for what he characterized as the "complete and total purchase of Greenland" by the United States.

European leadership swiftly rejected the tariff blackmail and rallied behind Denmark in a unified front.

Earlier Sunday, the eight targeted European nations released a joint statement condemning the American threat while reaffirming their dedication to Arctic security frameworks and the inviolability of national sovereignty.

The extraordinary council meeting represents the EU's most serious response yet to Trump's controversial territorial ambitions, signaling Brussels will not tolerate economic coercion tied to geopolitical demands. The gathering will coordinate a comprehensive European strategy as transatlantic tensions reach a dangerous inflection point over the strategically vital Arctic territory.
