Sudanese Army Thwarts Assault Launched by RSF in South Kordofan
(MENAFN) Sudanese military forces successfully defended the strategic town of Al-Kuweik in South Kordofan against a large-scale offensive launched by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and their allied Sudan People's Liberation Movement–North (SPLM-N), military officials confirmed Wednesday.
Government troops engaged the attacking militia early Wednesday morning, according to sources who briefed media. The confrontation resulted in significant casualties and equipment destruction among the assaulting forces, compelling them to withdraw from the battlefield. Military personnel confiscated multiple armored and combat vehicles abandoned during the retreat, the sources reported.
Neither the RSF nor SPLM-North responded to requests for comment regarding the alleged defeat.
Footage distributed across social media platforms by military members captured troops celebrating their successful defense of the town.
The three Kordofan provinces—North, West, and South—have experienced escalating violence in recent weeks as government forces and RSF militia clash repeatedly, forcing tens of thousands of residents to flee their homes.
Sudan's territorial control remains fractured across its 18 states. The RSF maintains dominance over all five states comprising the western Darfur region, though portions of northern North Darfur remain under military authority. Government forces control the majority of the remaining 13 states spanning the country's southern, northern, eastern, and central regions, including Khartoum, the national capital.
The devastating war between Sudan's national army and the RSF paramilitary organization erupted in April 2023, claiming thousands of lives and displacing millions more across the conflict-torn nation.
