S. Korea’s Ousted President Yoon to Spend Five Years in Prison
(MENAFN) South Korea's former leader Yoon Suk Yeol received a five-year prison term Friday for blocking law enforcement officials who sought to arrest him in 2024, according to a news agency based in Seoul.
The conviction represents Yoon's initial sentencing across eight separate criminal proceedings he currently faces, which include accusations that he orchestrated an insurrection via his martial law decree issued in December 2024.
Prosecutors operating under Special Counsel Cho Eun-suk requested a decade behind bars last month, contending that Yoon perpetrated a "grave crime" by "privatizing" government agencies to hide and legitimize his alleged criminal conduct.
Earlier this week, the special prosecution team escalated their legal assault, seeking capital punishment for Yoon on insurrection-related charges. Judicial authorities will deliver a verdict on that matter February 19.
The disgraced former head of state confronts eight total trials stemming from his attempted military rule, corruption allegations involving his spouse, and a 2023 marine officer fatality.
Yoon became the first incumbent South Korean president ever detained when authorities arrested and charged him with leading an insurrection this past January. Following his March release, he was apprehended again in July and has stayed in custody continuously since that time.
