Belgium joins NATO reconnaissance mission in Greenland
(MENAFN) Belgium announced it will participate in an international reconnaissance mission in Greenland beginning January 19, as NATO continues to expand its focus on Arctic security, according to official statements.
Belgian armed forces will deploy one officer to the mission, which is operating under Danish command, Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot stated on social media. The initiative is part of NATO’s broader effort to increase military presence and training opportunities in the Arctic, a region considered increasingly strategic.
Several allied countries are contributing to the reconnaissance mission, including France, Germany, the UK, Sweden, and Norway.
“This reconnaissance mission fully aligns with our efforts to strengthen international cooperation. The Arctic region requires a common approach from all allies, and Belgium is pleased to assume its responsibilities in this regard,” Prevot said.
Defense Minister Theo Francken added: “The security of the Arctic region is of strategic importance to the entire Alliance. By participating in this mission, we demonstrate our commitment within NATO and contribute to collective efforts to secure this strategically important region.”
The mission aims to identify opportunities for future military exercises in Greenland and assess options to expand military presence for deterrence and defense in the geostrategic area.
Greenland, a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has attracted US attention due to its strategic location, vast mineral resources, and growing concerns about Russian and Chinese activity in the region.
