Macron warns of any violations of Greenland
(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel Macron has warned that any infringement on Greenland’s sovereignty would trigger “unprecedented cascading consequences,” responding to renewed statements from the United States about taking control of the Arctic territory.
The remarks were delivered during a cabinet meeting, as confirmed by a government spokesperson, amid repeated expressions of interest from Washington in acquiring the autonomous territory governed by Denmark.
“We do not underestimate the statements on Greenland. If the sovereignty of a European and allied country were affected, the cascading consequences would be unprecedented,” Macron was quoted as saying.
French officials stressed that Paris is closely monitoring developments and would respond “in full solidarity with Denmark and its sovereignty.”
According to reports, Macron recently held discussions with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, while his office indicated that France is also consulting with Germany and the United Kingdom regarding the situation and potential responses.
Earlier, France’s foreign minister urged Washington to “stop blackmailing” Denmark over Greenland, arguing that a US military intervention was unlikely and that “nothing could justify it.”
Greenland, which governs its internal affairs while remaining part of the Kingdom of Denmark, has long drawn US attention because of its strategic Arctic position and significant mineral wealth. Both Danish and Greenlandic authorities have consistently rejected any notion of selling the territory, reiterating Denmark’s sovereignty over the island.
Meanwhile, Denmark has announced plans to strengthen and establish a more permanent military presence in Greenland, underscoring its commitment to defending the territory.
