UK Moves to Fast-Track Iran Sanctions Measure
(MENAFN) Britain is accelerating comprehensive sanctions legislation targeting Iran across multiple critical sectors, Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper announced Tuesday before parliament.
Cooper told the House of Commons that the government would expedite laws "to implement full and further sanctions and sectoral measures" against Iran. The proposed restrictions will span a wide economic range, she explained, noting that "further measures will target finance, energy, transport, software, and other significant industries."
The announcement follows heightened diplomatic tensions after Iran's foreign ministry summoned diplomatic representatives from Britain, Germany, France, and Italy on Monday, according to a news agency. The summons came in response to those governments voicing support for demonstrations that erupted throughout Iran in recent weeks.
During Monday's diplomatic meetings in Tehran, Iranian officials presented the envoys with "video evidence of violent acts by rioters," asserting the activities exceeded the boundaries of peaceful demonstrations, a news agency reported.
The protests, which ignited across Iran late last month, have triggered a sharp escalation in tensions between Tehran and Western capitals, with London now preparing its most aggressive economic countermeasures to date.
