Medvedev mockingly urges Trump to hurry on Greenland
(MENAFN) Russia’s deputy security chief Dmitry Medvedev pokes fun at US President Donald Trump on Monday, suggesting that Greenland could vote to join Russia if the United States does not quickly take control of the autonomous territory, according to reports.
Speaking on a Russian media platform, Medvedev quips that a delayed US “incorporation” of Greenland could trigger a sudden referendum in which its roughly 55,000 residents choose to join Russia. He says, “Trump needs to hurry up. According to unverified information, within a few days, there could be a sudden referendum where all 55,000 residents of Greenland might vote to join Russia. And that's it!”
Trump has repeatedly emphasized Greenland’s strategic importance, claiming without evidence that the island is “covered with Russian and Chinese submarines all over the place.”
Medvedev adds a sarcastic twist, suggesting that a US takeover of Greenland would also help address the “hornets' nest of drug mafia in the hotbed of apocalyptic evil,” referring to Nuuk, the territory’s capital and largest city with around 20,000 residents. He also seems to reference a recent US operation in Venezuela targeting President Nicolas Maduro on drug charges.
In further mockery, Medvedev highlights Trump’s social media antics, including a fabricated Wikipedia image labeling him “acting president of Venezuela,” and says, “Secondly, brilliant Trump would acquire a new title -- acting president of Greenland, which he would handle excellently.”
The comments are widely viewed as ironic commentary on US ambitions in Greenland and Medvedev’s humorous critique of Trump’s statements, according to reports.
