German government voices alarm over deadly crackdown in Iran
(MENAFN) Germany expressed deep concern on Monday regarding the escalating fatalities in ongoing anti-government demonstrations across Iran.
Deputy government spokesperson Sebastian Hille said, “The situation in Iran is deeply concerning. People from all parts of the country are peacefully demonstrating for freedom and a better life in their country.” He added, “The chancellor calls on the Iranian leadership to protect its people instead of threatening them. We condemn in the strongest terms the violence that the leadership in Tehran is directing against its own people. This violence must end.”
Protests began on December 28 at Tehran’s Grand Bazaar over the sharp depreciation of the Iranian rial and worsening economic conditions, later spreading to multiple cities nationwide.
While Iran has not released official casualty figures, the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) estimates at least 544 people—including both protesters and security forces—have died, and more than 1,000 have been injured. HRANA also reports that at least 10,681 people have been arrested across 585 protest locations in all 31 provinces.
Iranian authorities have described the unrest as “a terrorist war against the Iranian people” and a continuation of US-Israeli aggression.
