UN rights chief heads to Sudan amid ongoing concerns
(MENAFN) UN human rights chief Volker Turk is set to visit Sudan on Wednesday, marking his first trip to the country since 2022, the UN human rights office announced Monday.
During the visit, Turk will meet with government officials, civil society representatives, and the UN country team in Port Sudan. He will also travel to Sudan’s Northern State, which has received tens of thousands of people displaced by ongoing violence in Darfur and Kordofan.
Since April 2023, clashes between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have killed tens of thousands and forced an estimated 13.6 million people from their homes, creating one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises, according to the UN.
In Northern State, Turk will visit the Al Afad gathering site, which hosts around 24,000 internally displaced people, many fleeing the city of El-Fasher, which fell to the RSF in October and has seen reports of massacres. The site continues to receive 35 to 40 new families daily.
The UN chief’s visit is scheduled to continue through Sunday.
