China voices support for Cuba after US cuts Venezuelan aid

(MENAFN) China voiced strong backing for Cuba on Monday, criticizing Washington’s stance after U.S. President Donald Trump declared that the island would no longer receive oil or financial assistance from Venezuela.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning told reporters in Beijing that China “firmly supports Cuba in safeguarding its national sovereignty and security and opposes external interference.”

She added, “We once again urge the US to stop blockade, sanctions and coercion against Cuba at once and act in a way conducive to regional peace and stability.”

Trump had written on his social media platform that Cuba’s long standing reliance on Venezuelan oil and funds in exchange for providing security services to Caracas had come to an end. “There will be no more oil or money going to Cuba — zero!” he said. He also claimed that Cuban personnel involved in Venezuela’s security operations were killed during the recent U.S. military action, insisting that Venezuela no longer requires protection from what he described as criminal groups.

The U.S. president urged Havana to seek a new arrangement, warning it should act “before it is too late.” Earlier this month, following the American operation that led to the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, Trump suggested Cuba could be a future target, declaring the nation “is ready to fall.”

Cuban President Miguel Diaz Canel rejected Trump’s remarks, blaming Washington for the country’s economic difficulties. “Those who turn everything into a business, even human lives, have no moral authority to point the finger at Cuba,” he said on social media, arguing that decades of U.S. sanctions have strangled the island’s economy. He added, “Cuba is a free, independent, and sovereign nation. No one dictates what we do.”
