Rand Paul Warns About Trump’s Greenland Threats

(MENAFN) Republican Senator Rand Paul cautioned that US President Donald Trump’s threats to use military force in order to acquire Greenland could undermine any possibility of a negotiated settlement.

Trump has argued that Washington should assume control of Greenland, a self-governing territory under Denmark, citing national security concerns and the need to counter Russian and Chinese influence. His refusal to rule out military action has unsettled European NATO allies, who have expressed solidarity with Denmark.

During an interview, Paul explained that Trump’s aggressive rhetoric risks alienating Greenland’s residents and damaging US diplomatic efforts.

He said: “But let’s say you wanted to buy Greenland – and I’m not disputing that that might be something we might want, to buy Greenland – you don’t get there by angering and denigrating the people who live there and saying, ‘We’re going to march the Marines in and take [it] if you don’t sell it to us.’ It doesn’t make them very willing to sell [to] us.”

Paul emphasized that saber-rattling would likely produce the opposite outcome, noting: “So really, if your goal is somehow, we’re going to rattle the saber and then they’re going to sell it to us, I think it’s having the opposite effect.”

Despite these warnings, Trump reaffirmed on Sunday that he intends to secure control of the island “one way or another.”
