Athens Airport Launches Largest Hybrid Energy Plant In Europe

Dhaka: Athens International Airport in Greece has launched the largest hybrid renewable energy power plant in Europe. The project, regarded as a major milestone in sustainable aviation technology, cost EUR 70 million, equivalent to USD 81.44 million.

The newly launched energy infrastructure includes a 51.5 MW photovoltaic (PV) power plant combined with an 82 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS).

With this integration, the airport now operates the largest hybrid PV–battery facility at any airport in Europe and, according to Greek media, possibly worldwide.

In addition to the massive renewable energy initiative, Athens International Airport is planning a significant expansion to handle up to 40 million passengers every year by 2032.

The expansion project, with an estimated total budget of EUR 1.28 billion, equivalent to USD 1.49 billion, will add 148,000 square meters of new terminal and infrastructure space.

Turkish media reports claimed multiple globally active Turkish airport builders, including Limak Group, TAV Construction, and IC İçtaş, are interested in the expansion tender.
