Trump government to send "hundreds more" federal officers to Minneapolis

(MENAFN) The Trump administration has announced plans to send hundreds of additional federal officers to Minneapolis, just days after a woman was fatally shot by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said the reinforcements are intended to ensure the safety of ICE and Border Patrol personnel operating in the city. She explained that the agents would begin arriving “today and tomorrow,” warning that anyone who obstructs their work or engages in violence against law enforcement would face prosecution.

The move follows widespread protests against immigration enforcement across the country after 37 year old Renee Nicole Good was killed in her car on Wednesday. Federal officials maintain the ICE agent acted in self defense, while local authorities argue the victim posed no threat.

Large demonstrations took place in Minneapolis on Saturday, with tens of thousands joining the “ICE out of Minnesota” rally and march from Powderhorn Park. Similar protests were reported in Austin, Seattle, New York, and Los Angeles. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey described the local rally as peaceful, though police confirmed 31 arrests were made during protests on Friday and Saturday.

Minnesota has already experienced an influx of federal law enforcement as the administration intensifies immigration crackdowns in the state.
