Iran warns of preemptive strikes on US, Israeli targets

(MENAFN) Iran’s parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has declared that the country will launch preemptive strikes against U.S. and Israeli positions if it identifies signs of an imminent assault.

His remarks come after President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu voiced support for demonstrations across Iranian cities, which erupted in response to soaring inflation and worsening economic conditions.

Ghalibaf stated, “Let those who threaten Iran be warned. Any attack on Iran will make both the occupied territories, all military centers and bases, and American ships in the region legitimate targets.” He added, “We do not limit ourselves to responding only after an attack and will act based on objective signs of a threat, so that no one makes miscalculations that will lead them to disaster.”

Trump has pledged that the U.S. would “help” protesters if authorities continue their crackdown, warning, “You better not start shooting, because we’ll start shooting too.” Netanyahu has also expressed solidarity with the demonstrators.

Reports suggest Trump has been briefed on possible military options, including strikes on non-military sites in Tehran, though no final decision has been taken. The U.S. and Israel previously carried out coordinated attacks in June 2025, targeting Iranian military and nuclear facilities.

The current unrest, described as the most severe in years, began on December 28 after the collapse of Iran’s currency triggered sharp increases in food and essential goods. Protests quickly escalated into violent clashes, assaults on government buildings, and calls from some demonstrators for the monarchy’s return. Authorities responded with nationwide shutdowns of internet and phone services.
