Hundreds of Swedes Protest US Venezuela Move, Israel’s Gaza Attacks

(MENAFN) Hundreds mobilized in Sweden's capital Stockholm Saturday, denouncing US military intervention in Venezuela and Israel's resumed assaults on Gaza.

The demonstration at Odenplan Square was coordinated by multiple civil society organizations.

Protesters accused Israel of breaching a ceasefire established Oct. 10, 2025, by reinitating attacks on Gaza.

They simultaneously criticized the US for its military incursion into Venezuela and the arrest of President Nicolas Maduro alongside his wife, Cilia Flores.

Demonstrators demanded Israel halt military operations in Gaza while calling for Maduro and Flores' immediate release.

In an interview with Anadolu, Swedish activist Sigrun Meder explained the protest targeted both Israel's genocidal actions in Gaza and the unlawful imprisonment of Venezuela's leadership.

She noted that despite ceasefire declarations, violence in Gaza persists.

"While we witness this horrific genocide taking place before our eyes in Palestine, we see how tents are destroyed by storms. Even though there is supposedly a ceasefire in Gaza right now, the bombings continue, and many people are being killed," she said.

Stressing that the world faces an era where international law is disregarded, Meder stated: "The only country that is forced to comply with international law is Russia, but when it comes to the US, the West, or Israel, they can do whatever they want, and international law is ignored. We are the ones who defend international law in the streets and squares. We defend democracy, and we defend human rights. We stand with Palestine, we stand with Venezuela."

The US executed its military operation in Venezuela on Jan. 3, capturing Maduro and his spouse. Trump announced his administration would "run" Venezuela and its petroleum resources throughout a transition phase.

Maduro and Flores were subsequently transported to New York, where they faced an initial hearing on drug and weapons accusations. They entered not guilty pleas to all charges on Monday.
