Mayon Volcano logs hundreds of rockfall events
(MENAFN) Philippine volcanologists reported that Mayon Volcano continues to show heightened activity, with 256 rockfall incidents recorded as lava flows persist. The volcano also produced 41 pyroclastic density currents, while sulfur dioxide emissions reached 777 metric tons per day.
Monitoring data revealed that the mountain remains swollen, signaling ongoing unrest.
Moderate steam plumes rose up to 200 meters from the summit, drifting northeast. Authorities have kept Mayon under Alert Level 3 since January 6, maintaining strict restrictions on entry into the Permanent Danger Zone due to risks of avalanches, rockfalls, and potential explosions.
Mayon, one of the country’s most active volcanoes, has erupted more than 50 times in the past five centuries, displacing thousands during its 2018 eruption.
In a separate incident, the death toll from a landfill collapse in Cebu City climbed to six as rescue operations continued. Officials confirmed that two additional bodies were recovered, while around 30 workers remain missing. Search teams face challenges from heavy rainfall, unstable debris, and methane gas hazards as they work to locate survivors. The collapse occurred Thursday afternoon at a private landfill in the Central Visayas region, underscoring ongoing safety concerns in the area.
