Macron Warns US Is Turning Away from Allies
(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel Macron stated on Thursday that the United States is increasingly pulling back from certain allies and stepping away from international frameworks. His remarks followed Washington’s recent military operation in Venezuela and renewed threats to annex Greenland, Denmark’s autonomous territory.
Earlier this month, US special forces launched a series of strikes on Caracas, Venezuela’s capital, as well as other parts of the country, while seizing President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. On Friday, President Donald Trump told reporters that a military option remained possible concerning Greenland, claiming that without US intervention, the territory could be taken over by China or Russia.
“We are evolving in a world of great powers, with a real temptation to divide up the world among them,” Macron declared in his annual address to French diplomats, reflecting on recent developments.
“The US has an established power, but one that is gradually turning away from some of its allies and freeing itself from international rules that it was still promoting not so long ago – whether in the field of trade or certain elements of security,” the French leader emphasized.
Macron further noted that France and the European Union are presently “facing neo-colonial aggression” while being “subjected to anti-colonial rhetoric that no longer corresponds to reality.”
