Syria Announces Ceasefire in Aleppo
(MENAFN) The Syrian Defense Ministry has declared a truce in three districts of Aleppo, the nation’s second-largest city, following violent confrontations between government forces and Kurdish-led militias.
The ceasefire, which took effect at 3am local time on Friday, applies to the neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud, Ashrafieh, and Bani Zeid in the northern part of the city. At the same time, Aleppo’s security command imposed a curfew across several Kurdish-majority areas.
Hostilities between the Syrian army and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF)—which administers large portions of northern and eastern Syria—erupted last week, displacing an estimated 100,000 residents from their homes.
On Thursday, government troops attempted to push into Kurdish-controlled districts, while Damascus demanded the withdrawal of “militia groups.”
Authorities accused the SDF of fueling “tensions and instability” and claimed the group had breached a prior agreement.
The SDF rejected the accusations, countering that its militias had withdrawn “openly and in a documented manner” months earlier, transferring control of the neighborhoods to government forces.
