Nearly Thirty Arrested as Protests Erupt Against ICE in U.S.
(MENAFN) At least 29 individuals faced arrest following demonstrations targeting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) personnel, officials confirmed Saturday.
Friday's unrest erupted in response to Wednesday's fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Macklin Good, 37, an American citizen killed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in Minnesota amid the Trump Administration's intensified immigration enforcement sweeps across the state.
Police Chief Brian O'Hara disclosed during a press briefing that those detained were apprehended after mobilizing outside a downtown Minneapolis hotel where ICE agents are allegedly lodging.
"We initiated a plan and took our time to de-escalate the situation, issued multiple warnings, declaring an unlawful assembly, and ultimately, then began to move in and disperse the crowd," he said.
O'Hara reported demonstrators assembled before the hotel entrance while some forcibly breached the structure, highlighting that one officer sustained injuries when protesters hurled ice chunks at law enforcement.
The Minnesota Attorney General's Office (MNAGO) announced it is launching a probe alongside the Hennepin County Attorney's Office (HCAO) "to collect and preserve evidence to support an investigation into the killing of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis."
'Blatant attempt to obstruct … oversight'
Congresswoman Ilhan Omar was documented Saturday being prevented by federal operatives from accessing an ICE detention facility near Minneapolis.
Following eventual admission by agents wielding pepper spray canisters, Omar stated she and two fellow congresswomen received orders to vacate the premises where they arrived to execute "Congressional oversight."
"What happened today is a blatant attempt to obstruct members of Congress from doing their oversight duties," she said.
