US Secretary of State affirms support for “brave” Iranian people

(MENAFN) The United States has publicly expressed support for demonstrators in Iran, with senior officials praising what they described as the courage of those taking part in nationwide protests.

Speaking on Friday, the US secretary of state said Washington stands with Iranians amid the ongoing unrest, declaring: “The United States supports the brave people of Iran.”

The remarks come as demonstrations continue across the country, with reports indicating that at least 65 people have been killed since the protests began. Those deaths reportedly include protesters, members of the security forces, and one civilian linked to the government.

The unrest has also resulted in dozens of injuries and more than 2,300 detentions, with protests said to be active in roughly 180 cities spanning all 31 provinces. Many of the reported injuries were caused by pellet shots and plastic bullets.

Iranian authorities have not issued official statements detailing the number of people killed or wounded.

The protests erupted in late December, fueled by worsening economic conditions and a sharp fall in the value of the national currency. The first demonstrations broke out on Dec. 28 near Tehran’s Grand Bazaar before rapidly spreading to other urban centers.

US President Donald Trump also commented on the situation on Friday, saying Iran was “in big trouble” as the unrest expanded. He said developments were being closely monitored and cautioned Iranian authorities against the use of deadly force.

Iranian officials, meanwhile, have blamed foreign powers for the turmoil. Authorities accused the United States and Israel of instigating the unrest and warned that security forces and the judiciary "will show no tolerance whatsoever toward saboteurs."
