Stephen Miller Reasserts US Claim Over Greenland
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump’s deputy chief of staff for policy, Stephen Miller, has restated that Greenland “should” belong to the United States, describing it as Washington’s “formal position.” The senior adviser, often regarded as a principal architect of Trump’s policies, asserted that no nation could stop America from annexing the Danish territory.
Greenland, which is an autonomous region under Denmark, has become a point of contention between Washington and Copenhagen since Trump’s return to office, when he revived a plan from his first term to acquire the island, citing national security concerns.
Tensions rose further last week after Miller’s wife Katie, herself a former Trump aide, shared a map of Greenland covered in a US flag with the caption “soon” on X. The post coincided with a US military operation in Venezuela and was followed by Trump declaring that Washington “absolutely needs” Greenland.
When asked to elaborate, Miller confirmed America’s intentions. “The president has been clear for months that the US should have Greenland as part of the overall security apparatus. That has been the formal position of the US government since the beginning of this administration,” he told a news agency on Monday.
Pressed on whether military intervention was under consideration, Miller avoided a direct answer but stressed that “nobody is going to fight the US militarily over the future of Greenland.” He also challenged Denmark’s claim to the island, arguing, “obviously Greenland should be part of the US” if America, as NATO’s leading power, is to safeguard the Arctic.
