Trump’s Greenland Bid Sparks NATO Concerns
(MENAFN) Secretary of State Marco Rubio informed US legislators that President Donald Trump seeks to purchase Greenland from Denmark rather than seize the Arctic territory through military action, according to a media outlet, which cited individuals familiar with the matter.
Rubio allegedly made these comments during a briefing after Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer inquired whether Trump intended to employ military force in regions such as Greenland and Mexico.
Trump, who first expressed his ambition to acquire Greenland during his initial presidential term, has tied possession of the strategically important island to national defense and rivalry with Russian and Chinese naval forces.
“President Trump has made it well known that acquiring Greenland is a national security priority of the United States, and it’s vital to deter our adversaries in the Arctic region,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated. She further noted that military action is “always an option at the commander-in-chief’s disposal.”
On Tuesday, European NATO members issued a declaration supporting Denmark and reaffirming Greenland’s status as a self-governing territory. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk emphasized that no NATO member “should attack or threaten” another ally, warning that a clash between the US and Denmark would undermine the alliance entirely.
