Prisoners Escape Jail Amid Escalation in Aleppo
(MENAFN) Detainees managed to escape from a detention facility located in an area overseen by the PKK/YPG factions, which operate under the name of SDF, in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo. The incident unfolded amid heightened tensions in the region, according to a news agency's report on Wednesday.
A Syrian security official informed the news agency that the prisoners fled from a jail in the Al-Shaqif district, which remains under SDF authority. The source did not reveal the exact number of individuals who escaped.
Meanwhile, the Syrian Civil Defense reported that 850 civilians were evacuated from Aleppo by 12:30 pm local time (0930 GMT), citing worsening humanitarian conditions and ongoing shelling by the SDF.
The evacuation was organized through two gathering points in the Al-Awarid area and Zuhur Street, as more residents fled neighborhoods struck by SDF bombardments, the agency noted.
The Aleppo Internal Transport Company announced that it had mobilized all its technical and human resources, deploying its bus fleet at full capacity to transfer affected residents and displaced individuals to temporary shelters. The company emphasized that these measures were intended to safeguard civilians and alleviate their suffering during the unfolding crisis.
These developments coincided with a statement from the Syrian army, which declared that SDF military positions in the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh districts of Aleppo are “legitimate targets” following the group’s escalation and “massacres” in the province.
