Netflix removes Chinese series in Vietnam following map dispute
(MENAFN) Netflix has removed the Chinese drama series Shine on Me from its Vietnam platform following objections from Hanoi over an episode showing a map with contested South China Sea claims.
The 27-episode romance drama features images of the so-called nine-dash line, which Vietnam condemned as "inaccurate" and "infringing upon national sovereignty." China uses the line to mark its territorial claims in the South China Sea, which several countries, including Vietnam, reject.
Vietnam’s culture ministry demanded the series be taken down on 3 January, giving Netflix 24 hours to comply. By Tuesday, the show was no longer available on the Vietnamese Netflix platform.
The disputed map appears multiple times in episode 25, during a scene discussing China’s solar power potential. The main characters attend a lecture where a map showing part of the nine-dash line is projected on the auditorium screen.
Shine on Me has been popular in China and other regions, ranking among Netflix’s Top 10 shows in Singapore, Taiwan, and Vietnam prior to its removal.
Beijing has not issued an official response to the ban, although its state-run media urged Hanoi to "separate cultural exchanges from [the] South China Sea issue."
