Zelenskyy meets Macron in Paris for Ukraine peace summit
(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday in Paris ahead of the leaders-level "Coalition of the Willing" summit on Ukraine.
"Diplomacy and real assistance must go hand in hand," Zelenskyy said in a post on US social media platform X following the talks. He stressed the urgent need to strengthen air defenses to protect civilians and critical infrastructure from Russian attacks, adding that "every delivery of air defense missiles saves lives and boosts the chances for diplomacy."
Zelenskyy described his discussion with Macron as “substantive” on Ukraine’s defense capabilities and “important political steps” being prepared for the summit. "That is why every meeting must yield concrete results – new decisions regarding air defense, new assistance packages, and new capabilities to protect the skies," he added, expressing gratitude for Macron’s leadership.
The summit brings together 35 countries, led by the UK and France, that support Ukraine and are willing to deploy troops in the event of a ceasefire with Russia. Zelenskyy called the gathering “the most representative meeting of the Coalition of the Willing,” which includes heads of state, international organization leaders, ministers, and ambassadors.
The meeting aims to review progress in peace talks, draft peace plans, and define the coalition’s role in providing security guarantees for Ukraine. The US delegation at the summit includes special envoy Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner.
Over the preceding weekend, national security advisers from 15 countries, alongside NATO and EU representatives, convened in Kyiv for preparatory discussions. Earlier on Tuesday, France’s Chief of Defense Staff Fabien Mandon noted on social media that he had participated in a Paris meeting of chiefs of general staff to discuss “security guarantees for Ukraine and the modalities of their implementation.”
