US envoy says Ukraine peace talks made significant progress
(MENAFN) US special envoy Steve Witkoff said on Tuesday that discussions in Paris with European leaders and Ukrainian officials achieved “significant progress” on central elements of a proposed peace plan for Ukraine.
"We have made significant progress on several critical workstreams, including our bilateral security guarantee framework and a prosperity plan," Witkoff wrote on US social media platform X.
The US delegation, which included Witkoff, Jared Kushner, Gen. Alex Grynkewich, Ambassador Charles Kushner, and White House adviser Josh Gruenbaum, met with members of the Coalition of the Willing and Ukrainian officials, including President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
"The Coalition also released a statement outlining its framework to a security guarantee. We agree with the Coalition that durable security guarantees and robust prosperity commitments are essential to a lasting peace in the Ukraine and we will continue to work together on this effort," Witkoff said. He added that discussions with the Ukrainian delegation would continue over Tuesday and Wednesday, noting, "We are hopeful to achieve additional positive momentum in the near future."
On security arrangements, Witkoff said the talks have brought parties “very, very close” to finalizing protocols and a comprehensive prosperity plan. "We think we're largely finished with security protocols, which are important so that the people of Ukraine know that when this ends, it ends forever, but we also think critically that we are very, very close to finishing up as robust a prosperity agreement as any country has ever seen coming out of conflicts like this," he told reporters.
He emphasized the link between economic strength and national security, stating, "We believe that a robust economy correlates and works directly with these security protocols. It makes Ukraine a strong independent nation, and we think that's really important in terms of the long-term future."
