US says seven service members injured in Venezuela military operation
(MENAFN) Seven members of the US military were wounded during a recent operation aimed at detaining Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his spouse, Cilia Flores, according to reports on Tuesday. This mission took place over the weekend and involved a military effort to capture the country’s leadership.
Out of the seven injured personnel, five have already returned to their units, while two remain in recovery, sources indicate.
"They are receiving excellent medical care and are well on their way to recovery," an administration official was quoted as saying. "The fact that this extremely complex and grueling mission was successfully executed with so few injuries is a testament to the expertise of our joint warriors."
During the operation, extensive airstrikes were carried out in northern Venezuela, targeting defensive systems and communication networks, while special operations troops conducted a ground raid in the capital city to seize Maduro and Flores.
At their initial court appearance related to charges involving drugs and weapons, both Maduro and Flores entered pleas of not guilty, according to reports.
Officials aligned with the US administration have described the mission as part of a broader effort to reinvigorate enforcement of long-standing geopolitical principles and to disrupt what they characterize as narcotics trafficking and corruption, while also asserting influence over Venezuela’s substantial oil reserves.
