US VP says Venezuela operation targets narco funds, energy control
(MENAFN) US Vice President JD Vance said on Tuesday that Washington’s military action in Venezuela is intended to disrupt financing tied to narco-terrorism while expanding US influence over global energy supplies.
Speaking in a televised interview, Vance said the United States is acting in the interests of both Venezuelans and Americans, stressing that future leadership in Caracas would be expected to cooperate with Washington.
"Whoever the leader of that country is, is going to have to play ball with the United States," he said, arguing that past policies in Venezuela enabled rival foreign powers to benefit from low-cost energy while channeling proceeds into activities that pose a threat to the United States.
Earlier this month, President Donald Trump said the operation led to the detention of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. He also vowed to temporarily assert US authority over Venezuela, including the possible deployment of American troops.
"What the president did, and really the entire team made possible, is to cut off that flow of energy money to narcoterrorists to then, of course, to cut off the amount of narcoterrorism that's being imported in the United States of America," Vance said.
He further claimed the operation would bring economic and security benefits at home, including lower fuel costs and fewer casualties.
"I think it's going to save lives. It's going to mean cheaper gas and energy prices for Americans. And maybe most importantly, it's going to mean that we have more control over the energy resources that exist in the world, which makes it possible for us, of course, to achieve better economic results for our people, and to use those energy resources as leverage to achieve greater peace and prosperity," he added.
Vance described the mission as “very important” and commended its execution as “flawless.”
In separate remarks about the potential use of Venezuelan oil, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said in a television interview that the strength of US energy production allows Washington to take action against oil-rich countries without causing sharp increases in domestic fuel prices.
Burgum explained that refineries built along the southern Gulf of Mexico were specifically designed to handle the heavy crude produced in Venezuela, which holds the largest proven oil reserves globally.
"Then, you need to dilute that heavy crude with a lighter product, and of course, we have an excess of that lighter product here because of the shale oils," he added.
