Tokyo’s Toyosu Fish Sold for Record USD3.2M

(MENAFN) A massive bluefin tuna fetched a record 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million) at Tokyo’s Toyosu fish market on Monday, marking the highest winning bid since comparable auction data began in 1999, according to the Tokyo metropolitan government.

The 243-kilogram (536-pound) saltwater fish, caught off Oma in Aomori prefecture, was purchased by Kiyomura Corp., operator of the popular sushi chain Sushizanmai.

"The year's first tuna brings good luck. We hope as many people as possible can enjoy it and feel energized," said Kiyomura President Kiyoshi Kimura, as reported by media.

The prized tuna will be carved at Sushizanmai’s Tsukiji flagship branch before being distributed nationwide. Despite the record-setting price, the company confirmed it will serve the fish at standard menu rates.

The annual auction drew energetic bidding and a crowd of foreign tourists eager to witness the tradition. Spending heavily at the year’s first sale is considered auspicious, with restaurants leveraging the event for publicity and good fortune.
