Trump Makes Declaration on Venezuelan Elections

(MENAFN) Venezuela will not hold fresh elections in the coming month, US President Donald Trump announced on Monday.

"We have to fix the country first. You can’t have an election. There’s no way the people could even vote," Trump declared during an interview with a news agency.

"It’s going to take a period of time. We have to nurse the country back to health," he added.

On Saturday, Trump revealed that American military operations had led to the detention of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his spouse, First Lady Cilia Flores.

He also vowed to impose US oversight over the nation temporarily, deploying troops if required.

He emphasized that the United States is not engaged in warfare with Venezuela.
"No, we’re not," he said. "We’re at war with people that sell drugs. We’re at war with people that empty their prisons into our country and empty their drug addicts and empty their mental institutions into our country."

Furthermore, Trump told the news agency that Washington could assist in financing oil corporations’ initiatives to restore Venezuela’s energy sector, a project he estimated could be finalized in less than 18 months.

"I think we can do it in less time than that, but it'll be a lot of money," Trump explained. "A tremendous amount of money will have to be spent, and the oil companies will spend it, and then they’ll get reimbursed by us or through revenue."

During the interview, the news agency reported that Trump identified several US officials—including Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Deputy White House Chief of Staff Stephen Miller—as key figures who would oversee America’s role in Venezuela.
