African Union voices serious concern over US actions in Venezuela

(MENAFN) The African Union (AU) on Saturday expressed “grave concern” regarding reports of US airstrikes in Caracas and the detention of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. In a communique, the AU emphasized its commitment “to the fundamental principles of international law, including respect for the sovereignty of States, their territorial integrity, and the right of peoples to self-determination, as enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations.”

The statement came after media reports detailed explosions in Venezuela’s capital and military aircraft over the city. Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil Pinto reported attacks on both civilian and military targets, prompting a state of emergency. US President Donald Trump later confirmed the airstrikes and that Maduro and his wife had been seized and transported to the United States.

The AU said it is closely monitoring the situation, including Maduro’s detention and the reported assaults on government institutions. The union stressed that Venezuela’s challenges should be resolved peacefully through inclusive dialogue among Venezuelans themselves.
