India assumes BRICS presidency amid global tensions
(MENAFN) India has officially taken over the 2026 presidency of BRICS, stepping into a key leadership role as geopolitical tensions rise due to US actions under President Donald Trump.
On December 12, Brazil handed the BRICS gavel to India during a sherpas’ meeting in Brasilia, with Brazil’s representative noting the symbolic object reflects both sustainability and the enduring cooperation that binds the group. Indian sherpa Sudhakar Dalela said the bloc’s priorities will focus on continuity, consensus, and consolidation, while staying responsive to global developments and the needs of the Global South.
India’s leadership comes as BRICS seeks to broaden its influence, and observers are watching closely amid Trump-era interventions. At the same time, India continues complex trade negotiations with Washington, which have been strained by tariffs imposed on Indian goods—partly linked to the country’s purchases of Russian oil.
