Palestine Launches First Embassy in London
(MENAFN) The Palestinian embassy in Britain officially launched operations Monday in London, following the UK government's historic recognition of Palestinian statehood last September.
The diplomatic mission, previously operating as the Palestinian representative office, now functions as a full embassy in the Hammersmith district of west London.
At the inauguration ceremony, Palestinian Ambassador to Britain Husam Zomlot characterized the embassy's establishment as a "historic moment," stating it "marked a profound milestone" in British-Palestinian relations.
Writing on his X social media account, Zomlot described the embassy opening as "a piece of Palestine on British soil" and "a symbol of peace, Sumud (steadfastness or perseverance in Arabic), dignity, and our people's enduring pursuit of justice and freedom."
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on September 21 that his administration had formally recognized the State of Palestine, advocating for a return to a two-state framework. The Palestinian flag was raised outside the former mission building the following day.
