US Considers Restoring Embassy in Caracas
(MENAFN) The administration of President Trump is arranging for the possible reopening of the American diplomatic mission in Caracas, according to a senior State Department representative who spoke to a news agency on Monday.
“As President Trump said, we are making preparations to allow for a reopening should the President make that decision,” the official remarked, requesting to remain unnamed.
At present, the planning remains in its early phase, and no definitive conclusion has been reached.
When questioned about whether Washington intends to resume operations at its embassy in Caracas, Trump told journalists aboard Air Force One on Sunday: “We’re thinking about it.”
The US embassy in Venezuela was shut down in 2019 after Trump acknowledged opposition legislator Juan Guaido as the nation’s leader, dismissing Nicolas Maduro’s 2018 re-election as invalid.
Since that time, American diplomatic duties concerning Venezuela have been managed through the embassy located in neighboring Colombia.
This consideration follows a recent overnight US military action in Caracas, during which Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was apprehended.
He was subsequently transferred to New York, where he and his spouse, Cilia Flores, entered pleas of not guilty on Monday to charges related to firearms and narcotics trafficking.
