UN Chief voices deep concern over US action in Venezuela
(MENAFN) The United Nations expressed serious concern on Monday over what it described as a disregard for international law after recent US military operations in Venezuela led to the capture of President Nicolas Maduro.
Addressing an emergency session on Venezuela, Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo conveyed UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ message, stressing the importance of adherence to international law.
"I have consistently stressed the imperative of full respect, by all, for international law, including the Charter of the United Nations, which provides the foundation for the maintenance of international peace and security," DiCarlo said.
In his statement, Guterres noted, "I remain deeply concerned that rules of international law have not been respected with regard to the 3 January military action."
The UN chief highlighted that the UN Charter prohibits the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, underscoring that compliance with these provisions is vital for global stability.
"The maintenance of international peace and security depends on the continued commitment of all member States to adhere to all the provisions of the Charter," Guterres said.
Guterres’ statement emphasized the need to uphold core principles during the current crisis.
"In situations as confused and complex as the one we now face, it is important to stick to principles," he said. "Respect for the UN Charter and all other applicable legal frameworks to safeguard peace and security. Respect for the principles of sovereignty, political independence and territorial integrity of states," he added, urging for "the power of law" to prevail.
He also noted that international law provides mechanisms to address challenges such as illicit drug trafficking, resource disputes, and human rights concerns.
The emergency session followed a formal request from Venezuela’s permanent mission to the UN on January 3, supported by China and Russia.
