Erdogan urges Trump to prevent instability in Venezuela

(MENAFN) Türkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday that he conveyed Ankara’s concerns to US President Donald Trump during a phone call, stressing that Venezuela should not be left to descend into instability.

In an address following a Cabinet meeting in Ankara, Erdogan affirmed that Türkiye will continue to support the “friendly people of Venezuela in their struggle for prosperity, peace, and development.” He cautioned that actions violating national sovereignty or ignoring international law carry significant global risks.

Ankara, Erdogan said, does not condone any breaches of international law and aims to act in ways that serve both Turkish interests and those of the “brotherly Venezuelan nation.” He described Türkiye as being at the “forefront” of countries defending justice, legitimacy, and international law worldwide.

Erdogan highlighted the longstanding ties between Türkiye and Venezuela, noting that the Venezuelan people and their President Nicolas Maduro have “repeatedly” demonstrated friendship toward the Turkish nation, and that both countries have historically prioritized solidarity in times of difficulty.

The comments come in the wake of US military operations in Venezuela over the weekend that led to the capture of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. They now face drug trafficking charges and appeared in a New York court on Monday, pleading not guilty.

Erdogan reaffirmed that Ankara has consistently opposed injustice, illegality, and oppression.

He said Türkiye is taking steps that draw global attention, respect, and often admiration, asserting that “no one can stand in its way.”

“Those seeking to plunge our region into bloodshed will try to sideline us, but we will not fall for it,” he added.

He also addressed terrorism, calling it “an imperialist shackle imposed on Türkiye” and noting that terrorist groups have been exploited as tools for this purpose. Erdogan said Türkiye now has a historic opportunity to eradicate terrorism permanently and pledged to continue the nation’s “terror-free Türkiye” initiative with determination, patience, and prudence to resolve the decades-long challenge.
