US Sen says Cuba’s “days are numbered”
(MENAFN) A senior US senator warned that Cuba’s leadership may soon face serious consequences in the aftermath of a recent American military operation in Venezuela that ended with the detention of the country’s president.
Speaking after the operation, the senator argued that Havana’s political system is approaching a breaking point, linking his remarks to broader US actions in the region. “Just wait for Cuba. Cuba is a communist dictatorship that has killed priests and nuns, they have preyed on their own people, their days are numbered,” he said while addressing reporters during travel with the US president.
He suggested that Washington envisions a future in which countries in the region move away from authoritarian rule and criminal networks and toward closer economic and political ties with the United States. “We're going to wake up one day, I hope in 2026, in our backyard we're going to have allies in these countries doing business with America, not narco-terrorist dictators killing Americans,” he added.
The remarks followed an announcement by the US president that American forces had carried out a military operation in Venezuela that resulted in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. The US leader also said Washington intends to exert control over the situation in the country for the time being and did not rule out the use of troops if required.
Maduro and Flores were flown to New York late Saturday and are currently being held at a detention facility in Brooklyn. US authorities say the couple faces federal charges related to drug trafficking and alleged collaboration with gangs designated as terrorist organizations. Venezuelan officials, however, have rejected the accusations and demanded their release.
Meanwhile, Cuban authorities said that 32 Cuban combatants were killed during the US intervention in Venezuela. Cuba’s president declared Jan. 5 and 6 days of national mourning in honor of those killed, according to official statements.
