Kim Jong Un says missile tests are ‘necessary’ amid geopolitical crisis
(MENAFN) North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Monday defended his country’s latest missile tests, calling them “necessary” in response to what he described as “the recent geopolitical crisis and complicated international events.”
The remarks followed Sunday’s launch of hypersonic missiles from Pyongyang’s Ryokpho district, which struck targets approximately 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) away, according to state-run KCNA.
Kim linked the missile tests to broader strategic goals, saying the launches confirmed that “a very important technology task for national defense has been carried out” and “showed the readiness of the DPRK's nuclear forces.”
He emphasized recent progress in advancing North Korea’s nuclear capabilities, noting that the country has achieved “important achievements… in putting our nuclear forces on a practical basis and preparing them for an actual war.” Kim added that North Korea must “continuously upgrade the military means, especially offensive weapon systems.”
Addressing the purpose of the missile tests, Kim said, “To be honest, our such activity is clearly aimed at gradually putting the nuclear war deterrent on a highly developed basis. The reason why it is necessary is exemplified by the recent geopolitical crisis and complicated international events.”
The tests come amid heightened global tensions following a US military operation in Venezuela over the weekend that resulted in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife.
