Maduro Set to Stand Before New York Court
(MENAFN) Venezuela's detained President Nicolas Maduro and first lady Cilia Flores are scheduled to appear before a New York court Monday, as prosecutors unveiled charges centered on narco-terrorism allegations.
The couple was transported under heavy security escort, dressed in prison-issued attire, according to reports.
US prosecutors claim Maduro orchestrated and directed criminal organizations responsible for narcotics shipments destined for American territory. Maduro has consistently rejected these accusations, while Caracas officials have demanded the couple's immediate release.
On Saturday, Trump confirmed that US military intervention in Venezuela resulted in Maduro's capture along with his wife Cilia Flores, also pledging to assert American control over the country for the time being, with US troops if necessary.
Following Maduro's seizure, Venezuela's Supreme Court ordered Vice President Delcy Rodriguez to "immediately" assume the post of acting president.
